For the third year in a row, American men’s life expectancy has dropped a significant amount. After choosing and reading the article, “Life expectancy for American men drops for a third year” by CBS News, it had made me think about the other blog comment I wrote about on life expectancy on elderly people in the USA. It is shocking as I read both articles because I did not imagine this big decrease in life expectancy at all. This article states that drug overdose rates are twice as higher for men compared to a decade ago. The National Center for Health Statistics has called this “deaths of despair”. Since 2014, the average lifespan of American men had dropped to 76.1…
For my first TeachEcoKnowmics Blog Comment, I reviewed "Life expectancy for American men drops for a third year" by Aimee Picchi.
According to the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS), life expectancy for men has dropped for a third consecutive year. They cite these as "deaths of despair" due to the fact that this rise is attributable to a rise in drug overdose and alcohol-related deaths. NCHS highlights that drug overdose deaths for men older than 15 have nearly doubled in the past decade, reaching almost 29.1 deaths for every 100,000 men in 2017. A decade earlier in 2007, it had been 14.9 deaths per 100,000 in 2007. The NCHS comments that this spike in young "despair deaths" is especially…
For my 5th blog comment, I read the article Deaths of Despair. This eye catching title had revealed a lot of information that can shock the country. It is sad reading this article, as life expectancy has majorly declined, especially for men in our generation. The average lifespan for a male living in the United States of America is now 76.1 years, whereas the lifespan for women has stayed steady since 2014. Unfortunately the cause of this decline in life expectancy for men is suicide and drug overdose, especially seen in white men with less education. This is very sad, as the rate of drug abuse has increased for both men and women, but more men being more likely to…
For this week's blog comment I chose to read an article titled Death of Despair because it sounded interesting. This article revealed a lot of shocking things that I never knew about speaking on how the life expectancy of men has declined for the third year. The average lifespan has dropped yet again to 76.1 years and the reason for the decline is due to deaths from suicide or drug overdose. The statistics provided in this article are also very alarming stating that drug overdose deaths in 2007 were 14.9 deaths per 100,000 but in 2017 it arose to 29.1 deaths per 100,000 which is a about doubled. Another theory predicts that death isn't tied to drug overdoes or suicide,…
Deaths of Despair was the article I chose to review. I chose this topic because the title had gained my interest, but looking more into the topic has interested me even more. The article discusses a rising trend in the United States which is a decline in life expectancy for men. According to the National Center for Health Statistics, the average lifespan for American men has decreased to 76.1 years in 2017, a drop of four months since 2014. The increase in "deaths of despair," mainly drug overdoses, is identified as a significant factor. Over the past decade, drug overdose rates for men have almost doubled, with younger age groups facing the most pronounced increases.
