As Americans, we often see the bad that China does to us, however, we do not often see if from the other perspective. The harm we too deliver to China in return. The Biden Administration severed China's access to western tools, destroying their efficiency in creating semiconductors. That and almost immediately having 3 U.S suppliers along with Europe and Japan to back out of China as well. China is attempting to create its independence and self-reliance, branching away from the help of the U.S. and other major countries. In response, China invested $1.9 billion to fight U.S. restrictions. Overall, this is alarming as the two biggest countries are battling over trade and using tactics to slow each other down. We…

Around last year, plans for the construction of a semiconductor factory owned by YMTC were canceled. This was one of many strategies made in preparation to combat the news that America escalated the trade war over tech. It sounded like other countries planned to do that as well as technology companies in Europe and Japan are expected to halt shipments and services with China. China is trying to become self-reliant in chip manufacturing as well as a variety of other technological fields as countries involved in the war put more restrictions on what they offer one another. The percentage of chips that YMTC uses from overseas providers is rather high too, at ninety percent. It appears that this trade traffic…

In the evolving landscape of global technological rivalry, the recent escalation of trade tensions between the United States and China has spotlighted the semiconductor industry as a critical battleground. The Biden administration's stringent trade barriers, particularly targeting the Yangtze Memory Technologies Corporation (YMTC), underscore a strategic effort to curtail China's advancement in semiconductor manufacturing—a move reflective of broader concerns over national security and technological sovereignty. In retaliation, China has embarked on a strategic overhaul of its semiconductor sector, emphasizing the development of domestically produced, less advanced semiconductor technologies. This pivot, marked by substantial state investments and an effort to reduce dependency on American technology, signals a significant shift towards achieving technological self-reliance amidst international trade pressures.

In Chang Che and John Liu's "‘De-Americanize’: How China Is Remaking Its Chip Business," the authors address China's responses to the impacts of increasing trade tensions between the United States and China regarding the semiconductor industry in China following U.S. restrictions. These restrictions, initiated by the Biden administration, aimed to limit China's access to advanced technology and components, especially in areas critical for national security. Consequently, China has been compelled to develop alternative strategies and domestic capabilities to reduce dependence on Western technology and materials. These responses include redirection of construction plans for semiconductor factories, increased state funding for domestic alternatives, and more, in order to achieve self-sufficiency in chip manufacturing in China.

This concept is interesting to me, considering…
