Mergers & Acquisitions

The main focus of this article is the impact that mergers and acquisitions have on our economy. More than 2.5 trillion mergers were reported in the first half of 2018, which is an astounding amount. This was caused in part by the prosperous domestic and international economies of the time, in addition to other elements like legislation and tax breaks that favored these large businesses. The acquisition of 21st Century by Disney and the merger of JP Morgan and Republic Bank are examples of this. There has been no shortage of mergers and acquisitions, despite the fact that Covid has hurt our economy over the past year and is now recovering. Due to the negative effects of…

This is my fourth blog for class, I selected “Mergers & Acquisitions”. The term mergers and acquisitions is the consolidation of companies or their major assets through financial transactions between companies. The article talks about 2018 on how 2.5 trillion mergers were announced in the first half of the year. For the year of 2023 the post pandemic followed by a reversion to move normal levels of M&A activity. Deal value in the first half of 2023 was $4 billion a 73% drop from the first half of 2022 versus a 45% decline globally. M&A market over the past decade masks the emergence and should continue to promote strength. One of the sectors with a downward trend is renewal en…

The New York Times’ article about a record $2.5 Trillion in mergers in the first half of 2018 is one that continues to be a trend to this day. As mentioned in the article, a large number of the biggest deals were struck to fend off competition from technology companies as the IT industry continues to compete for the most innovative technology. This article was written in 2018, but in this blog post, I wanted to connect the themes to a major merger completed in 2020: the merger of T-Mobile and Sprint. Prior to the merger, the U.S. had four major wireless carriers: Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile, and Sprint. A merger between T-Mobile and Sprint would put them closer in line…

This report focuses on how mergers and acquisitions affect our economy. A merger is an agreement that brings together two businesses to form a single new entity. This is often done to increase a company's size, enter new markets, or gain market share. An acquisition is a business transaction whereas one company purchases another company. As of 2018, according to this article, more than 2.5 trillion mergers were announced in the first half of the year. Both domestic and international elements of the economy such as tax cuts and high asset markets result in massive corporate earnings. During 2018, the U.S. had low interest rates which resulted in plenty of mergers and acquisitions in fields such as media and health…

Stephen Grocer of the New York Times presents a deep dive into just how 201i8 was a truly unprecedented year in the realm for mergers in the financial sector. He says it right in the title in that "$2.8 trillion in mergers were announced in the first half of 2018"; nearly $3 trillion in value in merely 6 months is going to attract a lot of attention regardless of the industry that it takes place in. Grocer places heavy emphasis on how almost half of those mergers occurred seemingly to fend off competition in the increasingly crowded tech market. Even more interesting was that the companies announced as part of these deals had their value skyrocket over 60% from where…
